I love going to shows without expectations and being blown the fuck away. Could be my new favorite thing. Seeing The Joy Formidable the other night, case and point.
With The Lonely Forest on the same bill, I wasn’t sure what kind of show this was going to be. I almost didn’t even trek upstairs at Johnny Brenda’s that night…that would have been sad. Anyway, they had a nice set and warmed up the crowd pretty well. The best part? Their drummer..he was absolutely ON POINT. There was actually nothing really crazy about him at all but he was just sick. You could tell if it wasn’t for him the rest of the guys wouldn’t sound so tight.
Then TJF came out and it was absolutely on. My only experience with this Welsh trio was a handful of tracks I have sitting in my iTunes. When they walked out onto the stage it was like they owned the place, and with a lead singer like Ritzy Bryan, they fucking did. She’s just a complete bad ass, and if you ever get a chance to see these guys live you will know what I mean.
Their chemistry was amazing and fun to watch. From the first song to the last..to the encore, they kept us captivated. They just released, The Big Roar, earlier this year which you can listen to on iTunes here…and they’re going to be at Coachella, I’m in love.
