I’m all dressed up with nowhere to go.
Don’t think I forgot to mention on this blog how amazing CSS were last Friday (10/21). I just needed some time to formulate my words on the entire evening.
Now, I never had the chance to eat at the Spaghetti Warehouse (I heard their meatballs were huge though) but recently the R5 boys put the nail in that coffin and turned it into an old-timey bar/music venue called Union Transfer. It’s taken me awhile to get down there but I was thoroughly impressed. These guys are true music lovers and the layout of the entire building is incredible, they knew exactly what they wanted. I mean it’s obvious, right down to the toilet paper roll placement because I pay attention to these things (it’s on the inside door, convenient!!).
I arrived right as EMA was blasting away crunchy guitar riffs. Give this platinum blonde a little time to ripen her sound because I expect big things to emerge, especially larger shows but she did well getting on that CSS/MEN bill. Having never seen Brooklyn‘s MEN, I knew I was in for some sort of live show antics. I dug the cardboard cutouts they had in place in between sets, even keeping some on stage during the actual show (I’m pretty sure the keyboardist was made out of cardboard too, but then again I was enjoying draft beer). These guys kept things wild, boosted an already great and energetic crowd, and really did some actual entertaining while simultaneously playing some fantastic music. Free association: a more listener friendly/less abrasive Crystal Castles with fringe-baseball ball caps to match.

By the time Love Foxxx came on stage followed by the rest of her Brazilian crew I was amped. This woman is kind of nuts if you have followed her band CSS ..at all, or ever. I wasn’t going to judge right away, but I was relieved when she took off that Betty Boop-esque wig she introduced herself in. This music is pure dance-rock to the core. The energy was phenomenal, playing mostly from their newest album La Liberacion but of course when “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” kicked on everyone in the audience went off. Love Foxxx was working that stage, gyrating all over the place. She even donned a Batman costume (complete with cape..) for their song, “Red Alert.” Between their 80′s styled synths mixed with Brazilian rock, fragmented-english, and just how happy they all were performing on stage it made for an amazing live experience.
They won my heart (like they didn’t have it already) when they closed with “Blackwing” but then they did a rap at the end and it was pretty much game over. A RAP SONG. THANKING US FOR BEING THERE. Do I have to say more? Oh, they also got matching tattoos right here in Philadelphia so obvi they’re going to remember us and want to come back again. And when they do you better fucking be there, because we will.
Right-click and enjoy.
