[SXSW] The First 48 – “Sometimes your car breaks down, and sometimes you meet Willie Nelson.”

Texas is really big, guys!  In case you weren’t aware.   Rolling into town at 1 am early Monday morning after 15 hours of driving straight from Nashville to Austin, we crashed hard at our gracious hosts’ house.  The Farrs are simply amazing, and I first want to take a second to thank & acknowledge them for opening their doors to us and being so accommodating.  You guys ROCK!!!

Monday, 3/11/13

Monday morning at 9am, Ryan & I had to get to work.  We had picked up a couple shifts at SXSW with our promotional company from NYC.  Any little bit of money helps, especially when you’re gone for a month!  This also gave us a chance to scope out the downtown area & get a lay of the land.

Start the car…

“Hm…”

“Well, it’s going.  She just needs to get us to work.”

And we’re off!  We worked right in the heart of the conference, downtown at the Austin Convention Center.

A look inside the expo room:

After work, we met up with our friend Jen Forchelli, CEO & founder of Astro Therapy – (Look her up!!  If you’ve never had your birth chart done by her, you haven’t lived.)  We decided to go get something to eat.  Headed to the parking garage.

“It’s on again!”

“Rev the engine…”

And…   Dead.  Our car battery died on the way down the ramp of the parking garage.

A parking attendant and a cop helped us push & steer the car into an alley just outside the garage.  We were lucky enough to get a jump from this friendly man…

…But the car died again.  Luckily we have AAA.  We got the car towed to an AutoZone.

Needless to say, we felt REALLY cool, when the car broke down this time at the corner of 2nd & Brazos, a main intersection.

The alternator was the issue…  We had to have it replaced.  Mrs. Sarah Farr came to save the day & picked us up since it was dark by this point and we had to leave the car overnight.

And…Day 1 Down.  It gets better!! (In a good way.. trust me!!)

———-

Tuesday, 3/12/13

Our gracious hostess Sarah drove us into town for our second & last shift of promo work while our car was getting fixed.

Day 2 of work was really fun: there were bands coming in and out of the lounge we were working all day, all doing exclusive performances and interviews.  We got to meet and hear Blondfire, Wildcat Wildcat, The Dunwells, and Delta Rae.  If you haven’t checked out Delta Rae’s awesome music video for their song “Bottom of the River,” you need to right after you finish reading about how exciting our Day 2 became.)  Having this job was a really good thing for us for these two days; we made some money AND we got to see some music we would not have otherwise seen because it was beyond the point where you needed an expensive, official SXSW badge to get in.

We picked up the car after work at 5; alternator was all better.  We had a show to do, our first show during SXSW! – so we had to get home, get the instruments, and hurry back to town.  We played at 1007 South Congress Ave at a makeshift, pop-up stage that only exists during South By.

It was very roundabout.  Here’s a word document chart breaking down 2/3 Goat got to play during SXSW:
We had a great crowd; some friends and some new fans were jamming.  It was a beautiful night!  After our show, we packed up and decided to further south on S Congress & get some food.  We found this place.  Pretty good food, and great atmosphere.

Sitting at one of the benches eating, Ryan & I met an Austin native who fixes cars, and we told him of our woes with the Nighthawk.  We got to talking about music, and he let us in on a private, invite-only concert that was going on only a few blocks away just off the beaten path.  Willie Nelson was playing that night, was the rumor; and if you acted like you were supposed to be there, you might be able to get through the front door.

So we thought we’d try.   Our other friends parted ways; our Austin guy went ahead to the concert; and Ryan, Jen, and I made our way there too.  Sure enough, we were able to secure our way in with our new friend, and we got in just after Willie had started playing!!  This is how close we were:

This location turned out to be Arlyn Studios, a fantastic studio with a roster of over 50 major recording artists who have laid down albums there.

We also got to see Caveman play at Arlyn, right after Willie.  They’re a great band!  Check out What’s Protocol’s recent write up of them.

**Tour Tip #96: Don’t lose faith; because sometimes your car breaks, and sometimes you meet Willie Nelson.

And those were the first 48.  More to come soon!!

Tour Diaries: June 2012 Tour Wrap-Up!

WOW… Back in the City now.  Still reeling from June 2012 tour… It was a TRIP for sure!!

I think I left off telling you about my chance meeting with John Prine at Kroger in Nashville.  The guys and I were so excited as we drove back, that we forgot to take our groceries in once we got back to home base (the Hallworths’).  $7 of Chobani yogurt was made inedible, but Mr. Prine is worth more than $7 of my favorite breakfast item to me.

We continued that night to our first show in Nashville this time around, the BMI-sponsored 8 off 8th showcase at Mercy Lounge on Cannery Row.

So much fun.  Among others, we got to hear the newest project some of our talented friends are a part of called The Lost Maples.  Awesome Americana/Alt Country!!

The next night, we played a small party at one of the hottest new venues in Nashville: The Sanctuary.  Our friend Mikie recently bought this place and converted it into a multi-functional music space.

Seems like there’s a trend of buying up old churches and creatively putting them to some other use.  In this case, it was a great decision!  The Sanctuary is already used as a rehearsal space & mixing studio, and we “Christened it” with the first live performance!

It was a great time!!

A couple days while we were in town, we took advantage of the pool in our gracious hosts’ community.  Ryan, Ryan, and I are all very driven people and like to stay in shape.  When we’re in NYC, we attend classes at Mark Fisher Fitness, an awesome gym in midtown Manhattan.  If you’re in NYC and are looking for a great workout spot and supportive community, look no further.  MFF makes you hot, healthy, and happier.

Nothing can take the place of classes, but when we’re not in the City, we find our ways.  Here we are staying fit by the pool in Nashville:

———————-

Our last show in Nashville this time around was at The Tin Roof.  It was the Summer Solstice, a night jam packed with music to ring in the longest day of the year! We all had some good food beforehand, graciously provided by The Tin Roof.  We sat at the booth, family style, with our Nashville drummer Andy Wilmoth (who has helped us break into the scene in Music City) and Stephen Hopkins, who played bass with us this time.

We seem to be getting into the habit of having shows that are on back to back days in cities that are hours apart… Not necessarily a bad thing, just makes the journey even more interesting (in a good way…as long as we make it in time!)

We started out from Nashville on the night of the 20th right after our show at Tin Roof, and started our drive to Charlottesville, VA, for our last show:  Artists for Appalachia, an event commemorating 15 years of existence for Appalachian Voices, an awesome organization that works to alert communities & citizens of the coalfields & beyond of issues that impact them; and does work in Washington, DC, to fight for environmental & human justice in these communities.  We were so proud to be a part of the lineup for this event.  Here are just some of the folks who we were on stage with:

Kathy Mattea

Daniel Martin Moore

Michael Johnathon, of WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour

The Honey Dewdrops

Trent Wagler of The Steel Wheels

Clara Bingham, esteemed filmmaker & producer of “The Last Mountain”

Jeff Goodell, acclaimed author*

*Jeff wrote a fantastic article that inspired me to write a song, “Green Paper Mountains,” that’s on our latest album.  HERE’S THE ARTICLE.

Here are some pics from backstage at this amazing event:

With the fantastic Kathy Mattea!
Annalyse & amazing singer-songwriter Daniel Martin Moore!

***We are proud to say that our new friend Ms. Kathy Mattea decided to join 2/3 Goat on stage as we sang one of our favorite songs, the Darrell Scott classic “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.”  One of my FAVORITE 2/3 GOAT MOMENTS SO FAR!!***

It was a very special night, culminating in the whole lot of us coming on stage and singing “Jubilee” by folk legend Jean Ritchie, led by Daniel Martin Moore and Kathy Mattea.

As I said, I’m still reeling from the amazing time we had.  This tour will go down in the books as an absolute favorite.  I really couldn’t ask for more.  SO grateful.

Til next time,

Annalyse

Tour Diaries: June 2012 Grazing Tour!

On Friday night, we were playing at Bowery Poetry Club in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.  A good friend and amazing musician, Matt Fisher, had his CD release that night, and we were lucky enough to be asked to be a part of the lineup of this “Hot Summer Night of Music.”

Check Matt out, he’s unbelievable!

We started out at 11:30pm right after we played, and drove a few hours into Pennsylvania.  We got about 4 hours of sleep at the Super 8 in Kutztown (a very nice Super 8, I must say), got up, and hit the road again.  Not my ideal – as much as I love traveling and playing, I NEED SLEEP.  But we got through it all and made it to DRYerson.

DRYerson

Our first show was DRYerson Festival at Ryerson Station State Park in western Pennsylvania, on Saturday.  We had a great time and met some awesome folks.

It was the 6th annual gathering of folks in the communities of Greene County, PA, at what was formerly Ryerson Lake – until a nearby longwall mine (a form of coal mining) caused the earth to shift and thus put a break in the dam which was holding in the lake.  The coal company claims no responsibility and refuses to fix the dam which would restore the lake.  The Center for Coalfield Justice, a great organization in western PA, currently has an ongoing court battle with the company.  CCJ also holds this annual gathering, consisting of an excellent feast of burgers, dogs, and more; and now has had music for the first time, bringing in 2/3 Goat to play!  We were proud to play for such nice people and for such a great cause.  CCJ is awesome.  Thanks Veronica and Patrick!!

*I am particularly proud of our sound setup for this one.  We started with one wireless mic and a lone speaker of theirs; added some stands, another mic, and an amp; and turned the situation into a fantastic setup for the three of us!  Being a little creative can go a long way.  This is one of my favorite parts of traveling with the band: #makingitwork

Nashville

We just arrived in Nashville last night (Sunday), and are staying with our good friends, the Hallworths.  They just bought a new home, so this is where we’re staying now.  MTV Cribs, where were you for this one?

But seriously, the Hallworths are two of the nicest people on the planet and they make our stays in Nashville possible.  Thanks, guys.

*Just ran into John Prine today at the grocery store here in Music City.  It was amazing to meet an idol of mine!  He’s gearing up for his next tour, buying all the essentials at Kroger.  Such a nice guy.  You just never know who you’re gonna run into!!

We play at Mercy Lounge tonight, at BMI’s 8 off 8th… Stay tuned for pics and stories!  You can also visit our website for more details & tour dates.

**Tour tip #4:  Enjoy the view.  Traveling and ending up in new places with new faces can be scary or difficult at times.  Take it one mile at a time, and enjoy every moment.  Otherwise, why are you here?

Talk soon,

PenPal Pete: Chaz Van Queen and Kool A.D.

Yesterday I posted the behind the scenes highlight reel from the music video that these two shot. In between locations they were nice enough to hook our friend PenPal Pete up with a personal freestyle. Check out what I included in Pete’s Package this week and watch the freestyle done on the spot by professional rappers!

I’m including Rapping 2 U by Das Racist featuring Lakutis because I think the title is appropriate as Chaz and Kool A.D. were rapping directly at someone.

PenPal Pete: Lisa Jaeggi

I Heart Science Pete, too

Last Saturday night I got to check out Lisa Jaeggi performing live in Bryn Mawr. The original plan was to record her live set and share it with you guys, but unfortunately the Milkboy Cafe she was playing at did not have a PA system. I didn’t want to do just another live act review because there are tons of other sites that do that, so I figured we could start a PenPal Pete feature and have Lisa be the first artist to participate.

Now friend of the podcast Science Pete has decided to be a good person and participate in an AmeriCorp program in which he will live on a farm in New Hampshire for a year while helping people with developmental disabilities. All summer we knew he was leaving and we wanted to make sure we kept in touch so we decided that we would be pen pals. My friend Danielle and I planned on sending Pete one letter a week while he spent his year on a farm.

While taking in Lisa’s performance, which was great by the way, I thought that it would be cool for her to write to Pete. Then I realized it would be cool to try and get different artists to do something for Pete each week and post it up on the site after he receives the package in the mail. Pete is doing something nice for others, others can do something nice for him. It’s the circle of life. See Lion King in 3D!

Luckily Lisa was more than willing to participate and she wrote Pete a great letter AND signed a cd for him. This means that not only is she a great musician, she is also a pretty rad person. In other words, she’s not one dimensional. Speaking of dimensional, 3-Dimensional Lion King!

Why not use the Mixcloud account?

After Record Store Day this year I put together 2 hour long mixtapes consisting of purchases I made. I posted a blog about it and included links to download the two tapes from mediafire. Those links are still up, but if you prefer to just stream the tapes from the site you can now, thanks to our new Mixcloud account.

P.S. My review of Centro-Matic will be up soon. I’ve spent the last 2 days pretty much laid up as my sinuses exploded. The drugs are kicking in now, though, so I’ll be more productive.

Take me on your motorcycle.

Guess what?  I’ve got some new music from the crazy Brazilians, Cansei de Ser Sexy, also known as CSS.

Not ringing a bell?  How about this song…

CSS is coming back at us with the dance-rock we’re used to, taking a break from their more alternative sound in 2008′s Donkey.

I sure missed Lovefoxxx and that distinct voice of hers.  Thankfully, CSS is dropping their third studio album, La Liberacíon, this August.  Have a listen to their newest single, “Hits Me Like a Rock.” I promise you’ll be stuck with this one on loop.

Lisa Jaeggi – Epic Epic

When I first heard Lisa Jaeggi a year or so ago, I was so drawn to the lo-fi rawness of her recordings because that’s totally my thing. I threw up a song of hers on the blog a couple of weeks ago and her people prompted a follow-up with a peek into her upcoming album debut, Epic Epic – slated to drop July 5th (Modern Vintage Records).

A full length album?  I was definitely intrigued and when I heard it…whoa.  I was completely thrown.  Especially when I heard the production quality, which I gushed previously about her prior grittiness.  This did not sound like the Jaeggi-playing-into-a-mic-hooked-into-someone’s-computer-set-up that I knew. I quickly learned that this album still sounds fantastic for all of the same reasons why I loved her music before.

Now, I’ve only heard three songs of this woman’s work so understandingly, a full length requires some content work, perhaps creating a theme or some sort of flow from track to track.  In Epic Epic, Lisa Jaeggi sings of passionate relationships (good and bad ones), the importance of holding onto and keeping your heart intact, and what it feels like to be completely enamored by someone else.  Her music has got an easy-listening feel to it but there’s exceptional depth behind that voice and acoustic guitar.

Underwater Seacreatures

This underwater seacreature is in no way affiliated with the band, though he would probably be sick on drums with all those limbs he has

Just came across a sweet chillwave band from Richmond, VA called Underwater Seacreatures because of their Twitter account and I like what I hear. They have thumping drums, laid back tempos, nicely designed synths, and vocals that can sometimes float within the music. Check out their Facebook page in order to check out all of the songs off of their latest EP. I already anticipate their full length that they plan to release sometime in August. Here are the 2 tracks that are going to probably be the nicest to listen to on my customary weekend drive down to Sea Isle City:

Underwater Seacreatures – Sincere Serene

Underwater Seacreatures – Speak Up
