What’s Protocol? Tanning Time Mixtape

Gingers can't get tan, so Sheamus is pretty pissed that he has no use for this mixtape

While listening to old calypso and Hawaiin records I got from my grandparents basement with Lindsey, we decided that it would be cool to put together a mixtape consisting of some of those songs as well as some original creations made from samples of those records. We figured it would be sweet to have those laid back and forgotten tunes meshed together for easy listening on the beach, since summer is approaching. I listened to all of the records that I had in this genre for a while and started picking out the songs and decided that the tape should be limited to 20 minutes since that’s the maximum amount of time you should spend with one side of your body exposed to the sun. The tape could have easily lasted an hour and a half since I lucked into so much good and obscure music. I included selections from the Caribbean Torpedoes, Harry Belafonte, J.D. Nicholas(Weekend at Bernie’s II soundtrack), the Hawaii Calls, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. There are also a few weird things I did thrown in there, not much though. I included an alarm at the end of the track with an English woman’s voice reminding you to turn over so you don’t get a sunburn. Hopefully you enjoy the mix and are able to put it to good use this summer.

My apologies to African Americans, albinos, and gingers as you probably won’t have much use for this tape. I’ll start working on something that incorporates you guys.

BONUS!!!

Everyone knows that most bros are looking for sweet chicks while they’re down the shore, so I have a song that’s perfect for night time at the beach. Love Making Mood by the Caribbean Torpedoes is sure to convince your girl to have buckets of fun with you in the sand. Just remember, it’s a no rubber summer and Plan B is plan A. Enjoy.

To think of all of the side streets we walked past.

Admittedly, last Saturday was the first time I caught a show at Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia.  I’m not sure why it’s taken me this long to experience this place, but unfortunately it has.  Anyways, I was not disappointed.  It was small and intimate, yet I wasn’t irritated by the close quarters.  I was also pretty surprised at how great the acoustics were for that wood-paneled arch over the stage.

The Generationals stepped on stage and went to work.  I don’t know if it’s just me but from the way they dress, to the way they play and sound I could swear they’re English..amirite??

I really loved the heavy hitting percussion going on and the sunglasses persona.  Solid, solid music this band plays and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Greenleaf – Actor Caster

Say For Certain

When They Fight They Fight – Con Law

Next up for the closer was Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Another band that has been treading beneath my radar, whom I’ve come to know through posts from Daryl.  They’re modern day groovy and put on one of the best feel-good shows I’ve been to.  Loved the band coming out in Nascar suits with actual suits on underneath, nice touch.  You can tell these guys have a blast playing up there, cue the bubble machine showering

the audience.  Take a listen to these Detroit boys and the suburban pop they output.

Skeletons – It’s a Corporate World

Morning Thought

Simple Girl – Horse Power EP

All in all, fantastic show that will be sure to keep you moving with a smile on your face.  I definitely recommend trying to catch them on their tour.

Right-click and enjoy.

BONUS: Water Hymn – Painted Palms Summer may be faking on a day like today but this song will remind you that it’s right around the corner.  I have a lot of trouble believing this cousin duo created most of the Canopy EP (which is slated to drop around the corner as well) separately.  Like a 2k11 Postal Service, I dig.

Cover Songs

Good news regarding cover songs!

This Must Be The Place – Arcade Fire Yesterday I was made aware of this cover by one of my Twitter friends (That’s her page, not mine). I’m a fan of both the Talking Heads and Arcade Fire so I naturally liked the cover. After discussing a few more covers I decided that I should probably do a post including some of my favorites.

Cuddly Toy – The Monkees This was one of my favorite songs as a 4 year old and I still love it today. This is the Monkees’ Vaudeville-esque approach to the Harry Nilsson original. Nilsson was a genius, by the way. The Monkees were actually the first band I ever saw live. I was 4 and they played at the Garden State Racetrack. A year later I saw the Beach Boys play there. That’s a nice segue to the next song.

God Only Knows – Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. I mentioned this band in my last post so hopefully you know how good they sound. Try being mad or upset when listening to this song. I’m pretty sure it’s impossible.

Private Eyes – The Bird and the Bee Here’s a cover from their album Interpreting the Masters Vol. 1: A Tribute to Hall and Oates. Buy the album. Then get all of their other music as they have some sweet original tunes as well as other amazing covers.

I think I’m going to put together a full playlist of cover songs on Ping once I figure out how. I’ll post a link for that in the comments section of this post once it happens.

BONUS!

Here’s a video of Mayer Hawthorne covering “Mr. Blue Sky”, originally by ELO. As you can see from the picture I post, he has recorded a studio version of this gem that we can all anxiously await.

International Women’s Day

I’m a little late on this post as this holiday was last Monday, but my computer was fried. So pretend you’re reading this on March 7th. In honor of women I’m going to post 3 songs here, all for different reasons.

First up is Aesop Rock’s new strip club anthem Take a Titty Out . He made this dance track for a friend’s short film and it sounds very different than what I’m used to hearing from him. It’s a fun 2 minute song that seems to be a farce.

Next up is the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. track Simple Girl . This song came out last year but it’s still good. Where the Aesop Rock song makes you want to get up and dance, this song calms you down and relaxes the mood.

The third song features a talented woman named Mirah. I like all of her solo work and now she is teaming up with Thao Nguyen to make music after the two toured together over the past year. Their album is due out in late April. They recently put out This Song .

Bonus Features!

I mentioned Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. so here is Nothing But Our Love from that same Horsepower EP.

Also, listen to the first single off of “It’s a Corporate World” due out June 7th here.

Since St. Patty’s Day is Thursday, here’s an Irish drinking song that my friend’s now defunct band Mountain Man made a few years ago.
