Blackedout EP

Blackedout EP

I first came across the mysterious Blackedout when late one night, I found myself in the tinychat internet concert venue SPF420. After “sticking around” (or keeping my internet browser open / headphones on) for a couple of the other acts, the host announced Blackedout would be performing next. A quick switch of the webcam to wherever he was performing from, which for the most part, was in complete darkness and he was set to begin.

Almost immediately I was completely enthralled with the sounds I was hearing. As I’ve said before and through a lot of the music I share, I’m a huge fan of late night/R&B type sexy grooves and spacey sounds and beats. After the performance, I was excited to delve into some more tunes and was even more thrilled when I came across this brand new EP just released on April 30th.

This is a solid example of the sounds I love (think kind of the same vein as Supreme Cuts, The-Drum, Holy Other, etc). This is pure sex. Really nice sounding pianos, synths, drums, water sounds, [probably] some found sound samples in there, and nice use of Rihanna vocals and vox from the song  ”Baby I’m For Real” (which was either taken from Michael McDonald or The Originals).

My only real complaint (if you can even call it that) is the brevity of the EP, spanning only about 15 minutes total. Anyway, hop on down below, turn the lights off, and hit play.

BONUS: for some non-EP tracks (that are just as chillin’) head on over to Blackedout’s soundcloud.

[Late Night] Creatures EP – André Uhl

André Uhl’s latest EP release, Creatures, is purely late night sounds. You may remember him from past feature on the blog when he did a fantastic remix of adoptahighway’s track, “Rhythm For a Basement Apartment.”

The Berlin-based DJ/Producer is back this time with 4 mind-bending ambient yet beat-laden tracks. The beats range the spectrum, even dark and grimey at times like in track, “Native,”  which conjures up images of  lowly lit underground subway tunnels or walking in the city after a hard rain fall that has finally let up.

Heads Up Philadelphia: Jon Sandler Tonight at The Legendary Dobbs

If you’ve ever lived in a city, then you may understand the fragile nature of a music venue. Not only do they usually have to compete as a bar/restaurant, but they need to fit in with the neighborhood, be relatively easy to get to, but most importantly, be something different that fills in a particular void.

Living in Philadelphia, I’ve discovered venues of all shapes and sizes, some as art studios, some as coffee shops, and some as fabulous restaurant/bars. In one of the country’s oldest cities, The Legendary Dobbs has newly been resurrected from its historic counterpart, JC Dobbs, a venue that’s seen the likes of Green Day, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bo Diddley, The Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, Rage Against The Machine, The Offspring, and many more.

Tonight, New York’s very own Jon Sandler will be taking the stage showcasing his fiery and soulful voice, passionate energy, and conscientious wordplay. Coming off of his latest album release, Late Night Champ, Sandler presents a tightly produced package that boasts his talent for creating extremely catchy pop songs. I’m almost reminded of Rob Thomas but there’s a bite more diversity and lightness to Sandler’s music that puts him on his own.

Doors open at 7:30, cover is $10. Check out some South St. action then head over to see a quickly emerging act that will do more than entertain you for the night. Be sure to check out his newest music video for “Late Night Champ,” which features Jon in an amusement park after-hours.

Late Night: My Ever-Present Memory EP – Deadpoole

I always love when I can grace your ears with a fresh, new electronic EP to download.

Awhile back I was introduced to an artist hailing from the UK but with only a handful of demo tracks, I decided to wait until he released a bit more so I could share. Deadpoole’s sound has a slightly harsh edge to it, there’s raw aggression inside those hip-hop beats.  Yet, at other times he relents and creates more expansive and modest tracks. I like the experimental nature of fledgling artists, soaking up influence all around them and quickly outputting their own version.
