There’s always something so lush and soulful coming off the fingertips of the English beat-maestro, Mecca:83. Mean on the raw drum machine with stacks of old vinyl just waiting to be sampled, this Manchester-based artist has such a great flow going on.
It’s been awhile since I’ve wandered over to his Soundcloud page, so here’s some of my recent favorites to smooth out your mid-week. Throw the headphones on and enjoy.
Also be sure to check out his newer project, Alexis Davis, which just dropped an incredibly fluid track dedicated to the master, Roy Ayers.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Now I typically don’t go this hard for our Sunday Listenings but this is a must listen. Especially for my Philly readers.
Just from the first listen of opening track, “Live From Xtxrnia,” on DistantStarr’s latest drop, Skxlxtor, I’m already bugging out. The sampling is on point, the fx borders on creepy, and the flow is massive. I’ve always dug his production style, more experimental than most in his genre exclusively making DistantStarr’s sound his very own.
But don’t let yourself get lost in just the instrumentation, his rhymes sound burdensome – aching to find a home within your eardrums. Collaborating with another Philly-local, Buddy Leezle, the duo prove they have ample amounts of talent and content to fill out Skxlxtor to its fullest potential.
Ah, Expansions Collective – they’re doing it real right.
BONUS: Because it goes without saying, but I must remind y’all – learn up on some Buddy Leezle.

Mecca:83 and his collaborative crew are in the process of coming up with something brand new for you guys and while working, he had time to round up some of his favorite tracks for a free download.
I’m at the beach this weekend enjoying some rays and the laid-back nature of a seasonal town and this track listing bumps ever so nicely. Kick back and listen to the downtempo beats, nu-jazz flavor, and various samples and remixes all featured in this 12-track compilation.
Fervent flow, fabulous crate-digging samples, and a heavy beat keep Alexis Davis’ newest single alive and well. I’m loving on everything that this trio keeps cooking up, showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Grab their latest, “Look,” and be sure to keep tabs on the gentleman here.
I really have come to love the jazzy instrumentals that Mecca:83 and his international crew come out with on the regular. They’re vintage and fresh all rolled into one, he boasts one talented group of artists.
His label FreeForm Records has undergone a facelift with a new message under the name Expansions Collective. Just a reorganization for image sake, I believe these guys were already operating as a passionate collective to begin with. Anyways, check out Mecca:83′s latest mix, Summer Jams, which takes our ears on a journey through his extensive record collection. It’s perfect for this break of our extreme heat lately. Sit back and enjoy, download the entire mix here.
It’s the collaborative nature that I love the most and the UK’s Mecca:83 is certainly no stranger to that. In fact, I think it runs in his veins. That’s why it didn’t surprise me to hear of his new project, Alexis Davis.
Two countries. Two time zones. Three DJ/producers. One MC.
The group Alexis Davis is not all about simple mathematics. It is a collaboration of four fans of one another’s music that decided to come together at a time when coming together is of the essence.
Absolutely solid from start to finish, be sure to grab your copy below.

Mecca:83 undoubtedly always lays it down but today we’re in for a special treat. He takes Von Pea’s original track, “Full Time,” and puts his own spin on it with his classic warping synth-laden beats. I especially dig the fluttering keys he throws in and a couple plucks on the guitar.
Late night music, this one should be a staple on the playlists.
How have I not heard of this local before? I’ve got plenty of love for Rise’s label, Free Form Records, where this gentleman’s smooth flow calls home but this is the first time I’ve caught wind of DistantStarr.
He’s got a laid-back style, hints of the golden-age with a contemporary spin on his beats and I’m just digging all of it. Wake up Philadelphia, this guy is in our backyards – open your ears. Listen to his latest 4-track album, Seekers, below and keep an eye on him, I hope this is only the beginning.
It’s going to be just a fine day. I’ve got a new instrumental track from the lovely Mecca:83 to report.
If you haven’t checked out any of his past work then this fresh track will school you in all the right ways. “Chapter Two (For Lucie)” comes stocked with fundamentally sound hip-hop beats and careful layers of samples and effects. There’s also a fabulous strings sample to neatly wrap everything up at the conclusion.

Mecca:83 (aka Rise aka 1/4 of Alexis Davis) is a producer from Manchester, UK. Although grounded in Hip Hop, his music draws inspiration from a variety of genres including Soul, Jazz, Electronica and Dub.
This wonderfully chillin’ new collection of hip hop beats and smooth electronic tunes entitled “Life Sketches Vols 1&2″ beautifully encompasses all of Mecca:83′s inspirational genres. It’s a fresh switch up (as well as a nod to the past) from the lo-fi, noisy, bedroom production I’ve been listening to so much lately. Really all around enjoyable sounds and slick production from a solid beat craftsman.
Get into a couple tracks below and grab it digitally or in limited edition CD over on Mecca’s band camp.
