[Nice In The Headphones] College

college heritage

There’s something just simply so fabulous about the French and their electronica.

College, who you’ll recognize from the art house drama, Drive, has recently dropped his latest album, Heritage, and it’s quite the gem. With his style of slight variations throughout each track and his keen texturing abilities, composer David Grellier creates beautiful synth-heavy soundscapes for our ears.

Catch the two track sampler below and while the vinyl is sold out, you can always grab a digital copy of the rest via iTunes.

Camera – CFCF

This is my second-cup-of-coffee-jam. It’s smooth, downtempo, yet fluid with elegantly restrained bit of tension. I love everything about it.

Build and build with this one.

ROYALTY – JONWAYNE

jonwayne

Check out this new squishy fuzzy sounding, glitch-hop kind of 8bit boom bap rap track from the big homie Jonwayne. “Royalty” is a track that didn’t make the cut for the Wayniac’s new album that should be dropping some time this Summer.

Also, check out his recent appearance on The Passion of The Weiss’s podcast, “Shots Fired,” where he, Milo, Jeff Weiss, and MC Nocando nerd out about independent rap.

[Late Night] Creatures EP – André Uhl

André Uhl’s latest EP release, Creatures, is purely late night sounds. You may remember him from past feature on the blog when he did a fantastic remix of adoptahighway’s track, “Rhythm For a Basement Apartment.”

The Berlin-based DJ/Producer is back this time with 4 mind-bending ambient yet beat-laden tracks. The beats range the spectrum, even dark and grimey at times like in track, “Native,”  which conjures up images of  lowly lit underground subway tunnels or walking in the city after a hard rain fall that has finally let up.

Take a listen below and grab the free download on your way out.

[Songs For Your Weekend Moods] Get Up Audio

get up art

If you’re based in the 215 then you certainly understand the underground street art culture that’s deeply rooted within this city. And if you’re a fan, you definitely have heard of Get Up.

A Philly native, Get Up’s work can be seen inside the Electric Factory, along Columbus Blvd., under the El, on hoodies and stickers, or even inside office spaces. This guy is hard at work leaving his stamp all over this city while many of us are asleep at night.

While you’re getting familiar with his wide range of art, tap into his sounds, all wonderful and diverse and better yet; surely to get you moving just in time for the weekend.

[Meet] Young Wonder

young wonder

Upon recently discovering Ireland’s Young Wonder, I’ve begun to think I’ve really overlooked the country and its electronic scene.

Heavy hitting production that seamlessly weaves together many different layers of genres, beats, and vocals to truly make a sound of their own - Ian Ring and Rachel Koeman are on to something. Some moments I hear Sun Glitters, others I hear shades of Gold Panda, even Passion Pit when things get super manipulated … but, the one thing that stands alone is that gorgeous voice of Koeman. And, it’s used in incredibly diverse ways, varying from track to track. That’s impressive.

Debuting their first self-titled EP last April, I’m curious to see what they’re going to do next. A festival in the States would be huge, just saying..

Dig further into Young Wonder below and be sure to keep a hold of them via Facebook.

And if you’re into remixes, jump over to their Soundcloud page. Enjoy.

[Out Today] Drum Therapy – Tor

Whoa is all I’ve got to say about Tor’s latest drop, Drum Therapy. It’s intense from start to finish; eerily tribal yet, very true to the trip hop sound.

From the amazing collaboration with Sufjan Stevens on Illinoize years back, Tor has finally come around with a full debut release. It’s been a long time coming but without a doubt, it completely produces.

I’m hoping for a vinyl physical release. Until then, enjoy below.

I Know You’re Tired Of Dumb Sh*t, So Check This Here!

PAPASHANGO is the sound of the bass devouring the treble.
PAPASHANGO is atmospheric music to strip to.
PAPASHANGO is drugs.
PAPASHANGO does not care about your eardrums.
PAPASHANGO is the Young Thunder God.

PAPASHANGO loves you.

Well, we love you  too PaPASHANGO! And for good reason, and not just because you share the name of a classic WWF wrestler (also known by the names Kama, Kama Mustafa, The Godfather, and The Goodfather).

Anyway, we just got hipped to the sounds of this fresh New York producer (or production team or enigmatic enigma) a couple days ago and had to share these tunes. The Young Thunder God describes his sound as “Atmospheric Stripper Music” and from first listen to the new track “apophis” I totally understand the description. Gnarly bass, pitch-shifted vocal samples and raps, hip hop drums, and some screaming synths. Digging a little deeper into his catalogue on tracks like “the forecast” you can still hear the similar style and in comparison, the progression Shango has made thus far. Definitely some cool stuff and I’m interested in hearing where he continues to go with his future tracks. Jump on in below and take a listen. (and get your $1s ready)

Also, all of PShangs album artwork is done by Ubiq Designs (aka Anna Canfield) who has some pretty dope sketches, cards, and designs. Check em out too

Coolant VIP – Pedro 123

Coming from the good people at xlr8r and B.YRSLF’s Newsletter, I received this crispy VIP edit by Ben Grant, an 18yr old producer/DJ from South-East London that goes by the name of Pedro 123.

“Coolant VIP” comes off of his recent EP, Swap Numbers, and well I dunno, it sounds pretty rad with headphones on so you should listen to it on them or a nice sound system and crank that shit up. Some funky wonky UK grime type sounds.

Check out the whole EP yonder and grab “Coolant VIP” below.
