Negative Collector – Shy Mirrors

shy mirrors

Loud, racing guitars and lo-fi vocals make up for a winning combination in Shy Mirrors latest release, Negative Collector.

It’s no-nonsense pop punk that spans an impressive 14 tracks. In a digital age where electronic music reigns king, Shy Mirror’s gritty sound is more than refreshing – it’s almost nostalgic. Opening track, “Unavailable,” immediately grabbed hold of my attention  with that amazing guitar riff but tracks such as “Discovery Club” show that these Swedes have a bit more depth than crunchy guitars and relentless percussion.

Check out Negative Collector below and be sure to check out their super limited vinyl package released by none other than Big School Records.

[Record Label Spotlight] Big School Records

This spotlight comes as no surprise to me. Matt, the founder of Big School Records, has been diligently working hard on his own time (and dime) to nab some fantastic recent releases.

Norwegian Arms, a freak-folk duo from Philadelphia, are set to release their debut album via Big School on January 15th. Wolf Like a Stray Dog incorporates an eclectic mix of influences always set to a complex rhythm. Beyond the enormous amount of instrumentation, the lyrics are introspective and layered.

I’m also super enthused about BSR releasing  ”the Gold (and final) Edition of The Appleseed Cast’s Low Level Owl Vol. 1 & 2 in a triple vinyl set.” That’s pretty big news you guys. Surely to sell out, reserve your copy hereLow Level Owl is absolutely phenomenal.

May I also point you towards artist, Bombadil? Free-wheeling alt-country/folk-rock that’s more than easy listening.

Browse through Big School Records’ site and have pride in a Philadelphia-local label doing it right.

Conveyor: Sun Ray EP

About a month or so ago Lindsey posted up Conveyor‘s new LP and declared it “Nice in the Headphones.”

After visiting the album I couldn’t agree more, these cats put together a really nice sounding album. And after a little more digging I came across their Sun Ray EP from last year and wanted to share it with you.

Obviously shorter than their new album but definitely just as good. Some of the vocals really remind me of the Beach Boys (anybody else hear it?). It also sets the tone for the sounds we hear on the full length. Check it out below and if you enjoy it, grab it on limited edition orange vinyl.

Nice In The Headphones: Whispers In The Dark – Supreme Cuts

I wanted to break this post up into two separate parts. Part I being about the album, Part II about finally getting to see these guys live:

Part I:   Ever since hearing Supreme CutsTrouble EP about a year ago I’ve been completely infatuated with the sounds this Chicago duo creates. This music encompasses nearly every type of music that I am strongly passionate about at this point in my (career? as a music fan) life and their lush dark, moving, atmospheric and grooving sounds evoke such strong emotions that I absolutely had to include this album in our Nice In The Headphones category.

Listening to this album is a full on sonically emotional experience. It’s like someone took Carl Sagan, Pink Floyd, The Flaming Lips (97-06 mostly), Ray Lynch, the essence of Chicago house music and hip hop/r&b and shot them all into the depths of space on a rocket ship together. Beats, bass, atmosphere, melody, space…It’s like a damn journey!

I’m still a huge fan of listening to albums in full and this is one of those pieces of art that needs to be listened to all the way through, with full attention.

Part II:   Just a few weeks ago I got the honor of finally catching Supreme Cuts live. I hadn’t heard much about their live shows but from being such a big supporter I was just excited to hear and see them chop it up in a live setting. On the evening of the official release of Whispers In The Dark the duo made a trip to Brooklyn NY’s Glasslands Gallery. Joining them were NYC’s Hot Sugar, Chicago’s Sich Mang, and Brookyln/Barbados rapper Haleek Maul (who performed with Sup Cuts on the second half of their set AND ABSOLUTELY KILLED IT) The whole night was awesome all around and Supreme Cuts did not disappoint. The sound system at Glasslands was TURNT UP exactly the way it should be to listen to this group. They sounded just as good as their recordings do and I was extremely satisfied that they can pull it off in a live setting.

I know since the release of Whispers, the duo has been catching a lot more hype and attention and me saying “I’m proud” doesn’t really amount to much but I definitely am, and am also EXTREMELY excited to what the future holds for these guys.  *Look out, August 28th is the release date for their mixtape Chrome Lips with Haleek Maul.*

Check out a few pictures from the show, as well as their dope as glow in the dark vinyl that you can buy HERE.

They say I’ll never get closer to the sun.

For being only a duo act, Brick + Mortar sure know how to fill out their sound. I love their defiant lyrics and drums, whirling guitars, and those shouting vocals of Brandon Asraf.

These guys are swiftly making moves, left and right. With their recent work of joining forces with Drexel University’s record label, Mad Dragon, check out their latest track off the upcoming 7” (June 19th) titled, “Other Drugs.” Heavy hitting in all of the right places, be sure keep tabs on these gentleman, they’re on a very good path.

Hands

I just came across these gentlemen via the Small Plates newsletter from a few days ago. This LA band just released their debut EP, Massive Context, on 4/10 and I must say upon the first few seconds of my very first listen of “Warm Night Home” I knew I was into these guys.

Hands have a very enjoyable, bright and tight sound to them. Really nice grooves. Kind of think less…adventurous(?) Radiohead meets a less punk-rock Bloc Party with a little Strokes (maybe?).

Anyway, you can stream the whole EP on their Soundcloud page, pre-order it on neato orange vinyl HERE or purchase it on cd HERE. I suggest doing one or all three of those things.  Oh, and check out their rad video below (seriously it’s pretty cool).
