bFunk’s End of the Year Roundup [2012]

It seems as the years go on, more critics are becoming increasingly cynical about the classic “year-end” lists everyone tends to put out.

Top 10 free non-commerical Soundcloud only releases of 2012, Top 25 rap mixtapes not including Rick Ross or Gucci Mane, Top 5 non-Dubstep EDM DJ albums released from April 17th to October 27th, The 3 most influential Eastern European female pop singers…blah blah blah. There are a lot of complaints. Ex: “They are all the same”, blah blah, whatever Thom York/Radiohead put out, some new indie band with only one release out that hasn’t even gone on tour yet, Grimes, the new Kendrick Lamar album, Animal Collective, The XX, Some weird rapper, …Well fuck, I actually like these lists a lot. I enjoy looking back and reviewing the year, seeing what new songs, artists, and albums I spent most my time listening to and discovering. At the same time I can see what other people spent their time listening to and I can find great new tunes as well.

With that little rant behind me. I give thee…my 2012 list of favorite songs, EPs, albums, mixtapes, and overall new music related…things. This is basically a collection of the music that shaped my year. I’ll try and keep it somewhat concise and organized in some sort of manner but we’ll see how that goes.

WALSH – Magnolia (Digital) 7″

WALSH‘sSmoke Weed About It” t

ape was on of my favorite releases of 2010. I’ve been a fan ever since, trying to keep up with his various singles, EPs, and collaborations ever since. Last month he released a little 2 track digital 7″ that continues the tradition of his groovy ass experimental 80s synth funk entitled “Magnolia.” CHECK THAT OUT BELOW RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND!

Runaway Music 3 – Walshy Fire

This by far has been one of the hardest mixes to hit my inbox yet.

Clocking at a little over an hour, Walshy Fire trips us up immediately with gut-wrenching synths under slow-grooving vocals. It’s an incredibly diverse mix that blends well, constantly keeping you moving throughout the massive ups and smooth breakdowns.

Dubbed as Miami’s “Prime Minister” and closely affiliated with Major Lazer, it’s obvious to see this guy’s on a nice path.

Save this mix for tonight, and explore the rest of his music catalogue.

Back Gettin’ High!!!!!

The Knoxville kid has returned!!!! (I feel like I say that every time this guy does anything) Mr. Brandon Biondo, aka WALSH has just dropped his newest release “Back 2 the High Life.”

Keeping in the same (and fantastic) vein as most of his previous releases, this album cruises through thick, groovy, synth and bass lines with a combination of those spacey yet driving beats. The whole thing kind of plays out like a “futuristic” 80′s sounding Miami cop drama. You know, guns, white leisure suits, nightclubs, and cocaine. At least that’s what I see.

Do myself (and yourself) a favor and download the whole thing and then on March 2nd go buy it on tape (co-released by Amdiscs and Dracula House).

Arrete

Arrete (French for stop or order or something like that) hails from Knoxville, Tennessee and brings that disco-electro-funky goodness. Oddly enough (or maybe not?) Arrete’s sound reminds me quite a bit of fellow Knoxville native Brandon Biondo aka WALSH. A lot of his songs have that throwback cinematic 80′s feel to them. Pretty cool stuff that I happen to enjoy, so I thought I’d share.

Check out some Soundcloud jawns.

Walsh – “Girlfriend”

I’m currently on the road with Laser Sex and have a bit of downtime before the boys go on tonight at the Stone Church in Newmarket, New Hampshire.

That being said, It’s really loud in here and I can’t actually hear anything BUT I’m already a huge Walsh fan and after cruising the inter-web a bit I found out he just dropped this new track Girlfriend” the other day.

I’m going to just take a chance and say it’s good. Hopefully I’m right.

I thought I’d be fine ’til I needed more.

So I made like, a sweet summer sampler mix just because I’m feeling generous and it’s the Holiday weekend.

I think all the songs sound..ok well, it’s actually just a random blend and some of my most recent music obsessions.

Have fun.
