We are stars trapped in skin and bones

Whoa.  It’s literally been work, work, work this new year.  Don’t worry though, I’ve still been keeping my ears out listening to some good music…make sure to right-click and save these gems.

Shine Feat. Cate Ferris – Nordic Giants A very light and relaxing song.  I’m loving the ambient sound this UK band creates and Cate’s voice matches well.  Haven’t heard much about this two-piece but checking out their myspace I learned that they actually don’t perform live in concert, rather they appear on a custom TV screen that they place on the front of the stage and create a more visual experience through that.  Odd right?  Or actually really cool…

Used To Be – Beach House This song is absolutely solid.  It totally matched my bleak, winter day earlier when I was trekking throughout Center City trying to find a damn car rental place that would accept an out-of-state license…I need to stop or this post could seriously be more about why I hate Enterprise then exceptionally solid music.  Anyway, been sitting on this song for awhile and just love the stripped down sound this duo creates.  Do yourself a favor and download.

Wintersong – Blake Mills I like the lyrics in this one.  A nice little folk jam to go along with this cold, cold winter.

Dress Yourself as Someone Dead – The Angry Years Perfect, another English-based band.  Apparently their influences are early Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and Queens of the Stone Age…I can hear that, totally.  A fun song to listen to, I like the driving guitar.

Enjoy.

I’m beside myself.

First things first, happy New Year!  Another year has come and gone. It’s an exciting time, and I hope the momentum keeps on going.  2010 had some incredibly solid music and I predict this year we’re going to see some even better acts.

So, here are some songs that have undergone some heavy rotation from me lately, all which I think will have bright futures this upcoming year..

Ghost Train – Summer Camp This song completely weirds me out..but in a good way.  I honestly can’t even classify this.  The light strumming, the weird ’80s sfx, an accordion, reverbed-out repetitive vocals…I totally dig it.  It’s a fun song you need to listen to.

Microlite – Trophy Wife I’m a bit obsessed with English music and I can’t even help it.  I think I must gravitate towards it somehow.  I love that the first 10 seconds of this track I had a different impression and then the drum machine kicks in and yeah, just like that.  I’m instantly in love.

Like a Ghost – Stanton Just an old simple love song.

B of The Bang – Monument Valley Another English band (told you..) I was listening to over the weekend a thousand times on loop..this song actually made me want to write this post/share this music in the first place.  It’s a song full of some despair but with a triumphant theme with a little help from some light horns/strings.  All in all a really nice song to listen to.  Can’t wait for more from Monument Valley.

And so it goes, first Monday of the New Year on its way out.

Enjoy.

She waits for the summer to find a lover.

The only acknowledgment I want for last week is that I got my ass kicked work-wise and that I am glad it is over.

With that being said..it feels different to be starting my week off back home in Maryland.  Can’t keep me from Philly too long though..just a quick break from the city .

Haven’t had much time for music..but enough to throw you these three gems.

California Sunrise – Dirty Gold So I think it’s officially safe to say that Fall is here.  I still love to coast to some breezy songs on sunny days like today.  As much as I’m a winter advocate..I would love to drag the sunshine out just a little longer.  These guys remind me a bit of Clive Tanaka and a little bit Bedouin Soundclash.  Feel the warmth.

Time (We Plants Are Happy Plants Remix) – Hans Zimmer I think I’m actually a bigger fan of We Are Happy Plants remixes rather then his original work.  This song is solid.  It’s got a sweeping, dramatic orchestral introduction and then gets plugged with the electronics.  The way this guy from Hungary unfolds his music is beautiful.

Last Summer – Germany Germany I might as well keep up with the nostalgic summer vibe with another solo genius, Germany Germany, who actually hails from Canada.  Sometimes his music is a little too out there for me but listening to his Last Summer compilation, I’m in love.  He has toned it down quite a bit for this mix and it’s fantastic.  I highly recommend downloading the rest right here.

Bonus: Bright Eyes – Vonnegutt I’ll leave you guys with a little something up-tempo to carry you through the rest of this week.  Vonnegutt has been getting hyped recently by being featured on Big Boi’s track.  They even have some tour dates coming up with Chiddy Bang..Keep an eye on these boys.

Enjoy.

Friday five.

Talking Walking Cloud – Dustin Wong I immediately thought this song sounded like a fucked up accordion at the beginning..but then turns into this amazing, beautiful song.  Dustin Wong, from Ponytail, creates this elaborate layering which I am in love with.  And he’s from Maryland? Yep.  Solid.

Meadows of Canterbury – Wizards Just a little dreamy soundscape.  The theme of this post is mostly instrumental/minimalist tracks if you haven’t clued in yet.  I admit, I enjoy chillwave and Wizards delivers.  I definitely will be driving down on 95 to this little tune.  Better not be in traffic though. Check out “Aurora Borealis” if you like this…ruLL gOod.

Sorry, I’m still drunk I think.

Babe – Evenings Just chill..no words for this song.  Just directions; press play.

Fade to White (Feat. Emily Reo) – Blackbird Blackbird Of course I had to post some Blackbird Blackbird.  I’m in love with them as well.  Their sound is just so unique and I’m convinced no one can sound like them or even come close.  Huge fan since the second I heard their wacky jams earlier this year.

Bathurst – Foxes in Fiction And to make it a clean five I’m including the latest from Foxes in Fiction.  Not too crazy sound wise but it’s pretty simple.  Just a little percussion and guitar.  I dig.  You know I’m a sucker for lo-fi.

This posting is dedicated to my roommate, who woke up in our apartment complex hallway.  These next 12 hours will be hell for us.

Have a great weekend!

Another dose..

Today I will be supplementing your ears with some female-dominated tracks I’ve been listening to.

First up..

Shine – Breakfast in Fur

Ok, this band originally began as this guy Dan Wolfe’s bedroom project but within the past year the band grew into a 6-piece psychedelic, folk-rock outfit.  I like the addition of the mixed vocals with Kaitlin Van Pelt.  Adds a real softness to the already fuzzy sound they have.  I really like it.  The song may get a bit repetitive towards the end but I really am digging the first minute of it

Violet Eyes – My Gold Mask

I know this is a duo kinda collaboration but this girl is fucking awesome.  I’m really into songs that interest my ears, songs that use sounds differently.  The percussion is great and it’s all done by Gretta Rochelle, those female vocals you’re listening to.  It’s rough, the guitar gives the track an edge.  They’re definitely blazing their own trail and I like it.

Gas Mask – RatTail

Not too much out there on this band..yet.  I knew I’d love them when I immediately heard their lo-fi sound and once the vocals came in…sold.  I just like the lyrics, the simple guitar riff..this song is good.

And I’m off to work!
