Post-chella…

I honestly can’t even describe the experience that has consumed the past 6 days of my life.  To tell you what Coachella was like… you just need to live it.  And if you try to do that day-time shit I implore you to spend some time on the campgrounds, that’s the real experience .

This place was an absolute playground for my eyes and ears.  From the crazy and interesting (as well as interactive) art creations set up throughout the park or the multiple stages and tents to roam from, I was completely entranced.  I knew I wasn’t going to make most of the acts I had hoped to see but I caught the entire experience.  And honestly, I felt bad for the acts who had the earlier time slots – that desert heat is no joke.

inside The Do Lab

I did catch a ton of different stuff (and plan to even more next year..).  One of my most favorite places was the Do Lab which featured a ton of DJs just throwing down set after set in a crazy, open-air tent.  The vibe was incredible and really fun inside.

The question I get most?  ”Did you see Kings of Leon?” For fuck’s sake…no.  I actually saw Crystal Castles kill it instead.  I heard some rumor’s about the lead singer and that doctor’s advised her against the show(?). Who knows but it was an incredibly set especially after seeing Skrillex earlier in the day basically dumping on Coachella.  They played a ton of songs but I’d say “Baptism” had just about everyone in the crowd going nuts, especially with the blacked out tent and the crazy lights.

Baptism – Crystal Castles

Untrust Us – Crystal Castles

Also caught most of Sleigh Bells which was fantastic..as much as I was afraid of them sucking since their new found hype over at MTV and all those god damn commercials.  When “Tell ‘Em” came on..well, the Mojave went insane.  Those heavy electric saw-sounding guitars are just perfect for the ridiculous sound system set up.  They were a great warm-up to The Chemical Brothers and their madness.  They killed Friday night hands down.  I checked out Flogging Molly for a tad but the light show over at Chemical Bros just called me over and that was that.

I was excited to see Freelance Whales. Bands like this I’d prefer to see them at smaller, more intimate venues but shit, this was Coachella man so I had to deal.   Plus, afterwards was Foals and Two Door Cinema Club.  These guys were just cute and played great..it was hot as hell but we were all singing along.  I heard great things for Foals’ live show and was not disappointed.  They went hard, a bit harder then I even expected.  The lead singer dove straight into the crowd off like a 10 foot cabinet..insane.  And my guys Two Door?  Killed as well.  I was on top of shoulders for this one, can’t quite remember the entire set but damn it was packed! I was with a few irishmen who were dying for their boys.

Sunset in Indio.

Generator ^ Second Floor – Freelance Whales

Black Gold – Foals

Eat That Up, It’s Good For You - Two Door Cinema Club

Sunday was pretty rad as well ( just like every other day).  Saw a bit of Jack’s Mannequin although I was absolutely dying of the heat at that point so it almost was a bit miserable.

Two words though…BARBARA STREISAND.

Duck Sauce was a lot of fun to watch in the Sahara and the inflatable duck was a fun feature.  After that I booked it over to the Mojave to check out Ratatat who were pretty phenom.  The duo was shrouded in darkness while an incredible light show was going on all around them.  Obviously I loved it.

Barbara Streisand – Duck Sauce

Germany To Germany – Ratatat

Wildcat – Ratatat

I’m pretty disappointed I missed Empire of the Sun..but I ate up Paul Van Dyk’s set in the Sahara Tent.  That was absolutely insane. The lights man..THE LIGHTS.  With a set like PvD’s…I’m sure his new album slated to drop this summer will be something big.  The crowd created some of the most intense energy I saw over the weekend and I was dancing non-stop during that set..even had to head over to the Do Lab to cap off.

The light setup in the Sahara Tent

Other then that..saw Cee Lo absolutely fail and be a drama queen.  And Kanye?  Yeah..I want to say he was ok.  I’m one of the people who was hoping he’d bring out some awesome random onto the stage for a collab but no..it was the “Kanye-show,” which was totally expected.  Interesting stage I have to admit.  Other then that, I had an amazing time catching a ton of shows and DJ sets, meeting new people and camping under the desert sky.

Keep in mind, I’m not telling you who was hot or who was not..this was my experience, feel free to live vicariously through it.

Right-click and enjoy.

It’s finally here..

Coachella is in my horizon line..well technically, I’ll be up even before the sun to get myself down to the airport in Baltimore on time.  It’s surreal that this day has finally come.  With days, weeks, and months of huge anticipation, it’s here.  It’s fucking here.

As much as I’d like to take a step back and be completely AWOL in terms of technology and electronics..I know I’ll probably sneak a few tweets here and there.  But, for the most part I will be completely away from this blog, facebook, you name it – which is actually a bit exciting to think about.

I’m leaving you all with some more music in prep for the festival before I depart.  As always, right-click and enjoy.

When I’m Small – Phantogram

Four Winds – Bright Eyes

Ghosting - Freelance Whales

Rat Is Dead (Rage) - CSS

Need more music?  I recently updated this page as well so you can listen to what I’ve got spinning in my Outback.

4 days…

So, I’ve been lurking around the Coachella message boards like a creep.  Hey, I just wanna know what’s up, that’s all.  I wanted to get a feel for some bands everyone seems to be real pumped to see..and I want to see how much it varies from my own pre-determined list.

Here’s a handful of artists that are hyping up people’s countdown to Coachella..

Gogol Bordello – These guys are wacky.  They seem to incorporate anything and everything into their gypsy-esque music.  People are going wild over them and claim they’re a must-see.  If you’re expecting some normal indie-rock, nah, don’t even bother clicking.  If I get a chance to see them out in the desert, it should be interesting to say the least..

My Companjera

Through the Roof and Underground

Empire of the Sun – A sweet little electronic duo all the way from Australia.  These two are a bit

out there as well but I have a good feeling about them.  They’ve got an MGMT feel if that’s what you’re into.  I just love their crazy outfits.

Standing On The Shore

The Thrill (feat. Wiz Khalifa)

Animal Collective – I mean, this band really speaks for itself.  They’ve been dominating the indie-music sphere for quite some time now.  They’re avant-garde and of course I love that they claim Baltimore as their hometown.  Check out these experimental tracks that will challenge your ears from their album, Merriweather Post Pavilion.

In The Flowers

My Girls

Summertime Clothes

As always, right-click to enjoy.

Meet Tame Impala.

These Australians create the most solid psychedelic-rock I have ever heard of and that’s a fact.

I absolutely cannot wait to see this four-piece at Coachella.

This is what rock was all about.  Not some lame verse/chorus,/verse/chorus bullshit that’s so common in today’s music.  These songs transgress.  They build you up, and take you crashing down.  They’re hazy, windy and make you fall in love.

Tame Impala does exactly this.

Listen to each song from beginning to end and take yourself back into time.

Enjoy.

10 days!

You guys, I’m getting MAD excited about Coachella..and that there’s only 10 days left.  Now, if only Southwest would get their damn acts together and are able to send me safely to Cali without a hole in the cabin, I may die happy.

All I know is I will be absolutely MIA for this one.  Trying to figure out logistically how to navigate the sea of concert-goers and manage to hang onto at least one person I’ll be there with..ah, that’s probably not going to happen.  It’s all about the experience anyways..even if there are some SERIOUS stage conflicts, I shall not fret.   I’m there to have a good time and see some incredible acts.

So, introducing my Coachella sampler.  Within the past couple of months I’ve peppered posts with artists that are going to be playing, but now it’s getting down to the nitty-gritty.  The next 10 days will be focused solely on the festival, k?

As always, right-click and save.

Ratatat – Guitar, meet your new friend synthesizer.  These two Brooklynites know how to create somecrazy, mind-altering electronic tunes that I used to love weirding all of my friends out to.

Mirando

Bruleé

Delorean – Quite an eclectic group coming all the way from across the Atlantic.  They’re a mix of club beats along with some indie-rock, one of the hottest bands coming out of Spain today.  I predict they will put on an amazing show.

Simple Graces

Real Love

Glasser – Meet female singer-songwriter, Cameron Mesirow, who’s blazing her own “Bjork-styled”
trail.  She’s one of those acts you can’t exactly put your finger on but you know she’s talented and you know you love it.  Plus her dad’s one of the guys in the Blue Man Group.  Sweet.

We got hours on you now.

And it begins..

Man,  what do I have to say about this band.  These two individuals alone have incredible talent and then combining them? Listen to “The Rain,” my most favorite song from this duo.  It has a great bass line that kicks in and carries the song all the way to the end.  Marketa’s voice blends amazingly with Glen Hansard’s.  I could go on and on here is what I am trying to say.  I was very fortunate to have a chance to see them at Merriam Theater in Philadelphia a year ago.  It was one of the best live shows I have ever seen.  The two have a stage presence that captures the audience and doesn’t let go and you leave the show wanting just one. more. song. I will absolutely NOT miss them at Coachella.  Whatever they call themselves nowadays, they are always solid.  Catch the indie flick, Once, starring the two of them..cute.

The Rain – The Swell Season

Leave – The Swell Season

In These Arms – The Swell Season

Falling Slowly – The Frames feat. Marketa Irglova

I remember the day I found Dallas Green and his lovely voice and guitar strumming sing-alongs.  I listened to “Save Your Scissors” and it was over.  I was an instant fan, I knew I would love every single one of his songs from that day forward.  A couple years back when I was purchasing tickets to see Tegan & Sara at the Electric Factory I noticed City and Colour was going to open for them.  I was thrilled.  Dallas did great as an opening act and even came on during Tegan & Sara’s set and played a bit.  I suppose if you were a Dashboard fan at some point in your life you can see the similarities, I suppose.  Apparently he’s in the studio recording which is all being tracked here.  Have a listen, I think Dallas has got something up his sleeve planned for Coachella.
