Fjords – Observer Drift

fjords observer drift

Sometimes, I just don’t feel that my words are necessary.

My ancestors from Sweden lived on a Fjord…
This is my second full length album and its title is Fjords. In many ways I believe that it is very different from Corridors, but at the same time very much alike. The drive and influence behind the songs strongly relate to those of Corridors. These themes will never be erased from my music because they have influenced my life so much that I couldn’t possibly stop writing about them. Fjords is about growth and change. Exploring the unexplored and seeking new vantage points. I think that each song stands for itself and has a separate message rather than contributing to an overall theme. I would try to tell you what each song is about and what actually inspired each one, but that is something I do not even completely know yet. I wrote all these songs as they came to me without stopping to question what they meant or why they existed in my head. So with that said, maybe you can help me with revealing what they mean by listening to them and providing yourself with an explanation of your own. With time and aging, perhaps each song will reveal itself.

[Meet] Fallulah

fallulah

Strong female vocals, check. Thumping percussion, check. Stand out production, check. I think it’s beyond obvious that we’ve got a winner on our hands.

Hailing from none other than the Nordic region, I wouldn’t expect less than an explosive electro/power-pop sound. I’m captivated by Maria Apetri’s vocals and her accompanying relentless rhythm. More notably known by her stage name, Fallulah, her fabulous debut, Black Cat Neighbourhood, is a mixture of cutesy melodies and power ballads with just the right amount of softness.

For fans of Oh Land, Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey and the like, listen to a handful of tracks from the album below.

Fallulah is coming straight off a brand new and lovely release titled, Escapismwhich you can nab here. Ready for the world, listen to Apetri’s latest single, “Out of it,” over and over again below. Enjoy.

BONUS:   And for my remix-heads…

[Meet] Luxury Liners

I’ve always enjoyed Carter Tanton’s knack for an ultra hazy sound but his new project is something else.

Under the new moniker, Luxury Liners, Tanton throws a heavy low end under his reverbed vocals in his latest single, “Caribbean Sunset.” Still present are the warping loops but there’s more of a harshness to it alongside plenty of push and pull between the percussion and the glittery synths. Off of the forthcoming LP due out April 2nd (via Western Vinyl), They’re Flowers should be an interesting direction to say the least.

Grab your copy of the track below and stay tuned over the next couple of months for what  drops next.

Sunday Listening: An Awesome Wave – ∆

I haven’t had the time for a serious Sunday Listening in quite awhile now but there’s no better way to revisit the series than with rising British musicians, .

Pronounced “Alt-J,” the group named themselves after a keyboard shortcut that creates the ∆ symbol. Four friends who met in University, they blend many different sounds and influences into one tight and effortless package. Spending a few years sharpening their sound playing shows all over town, Alt-J have seamlessly created a genre of their own creatively pulling from folk and electronic genres, layering tones from all over the spectrum that give their debut album, An Awesome Wave, such an interesting and unique feel. Track to track the listener is taken through heavy lo-fi tones, live percussion, experimental guitar riffs, and lovely vocal harmonies.

“Something Good” may have been the first song that drew me in but upon heavy rotation,  tracks such as “Tesselate” and “Dissolve Me” have demanded extra play. This album is something like a fantastic treat, unexpected yet much appreciated. Be sure to grab your copy here.

Blank Mind Empty Heart – Germany Germany

It’s pretty much everything I hoped for. Cascading synths, emotive song structure, and light electronica that carries from track to track. It’s more than enjoyable I really must say. From the artist himself, Drew Harris has this to say about his latest release, Blank Mind Empty Heart :

Blank Mind Empty Heart is a collection of songs I’ve been working on for the past year. Rather than get comfortable with the sounds I made on Adventures, I wanted to branch out, try some new things and try to create something unique. I’m really happy with Adventures, but I’d rather take some risks and craft something different.

This is my art; I hope you enjoy it.

Listen to it in its entirety below and grab the whole thing for only $5, but I recommend getting the limited edition cassette option.

I don’t have the strength to hold you.

Catching up.

That’s been my M.O. for the past..oh, I don’t know, month now? There’s a difference tonight though, it’s the acceptance that I can’t and will not stress over the little amount of hours that run my day. I’ll chip away slowly, in between work, early in the morning, during lunch breaks, you name it. I’ll get there, eventually. Fortunately, I keep better track of the music side of things.

Canadian electronic prodigy Germany Germany has been on this blog’s radar for a couple of years now and we’ve really had a chance to see (and hear) him develop his sound. Earlier this year  he teased us with a couple of tracks for his upcoming album due out sometime this summer, Blank Mind Empty Heart, the follow up to Adventures. I really love the emotion and despair pouring through “Departure,” (featured previously here) and his talent for adding such depth to the genre.

Check out a handful of tracks below including a cover from the movie Drive to keep you going unti BMEH officially drops on July 16th.

Meet: Cassettes Won’t Listen

Don’t let that picture above fool you, the man behind Brooklyn-based Cassettes Won’t Listen can make some really diverse music.

Listening to shuffle every so often I get to revisit music I gave plenty of listens to awhile back and today, the airy indietronica track, “Waiting,” came through my speakers. I love the light hand-claps, glitchy beats and searing synths. And before the song was nearly finished I was already searching through pages and pages of what the multi-instrumentalist, Jason Drake, was up to next.

Grab “Waiting” below and check out what he’s recently been up to. The Primitive Radio Gods song is absolutely frenetic and a unique take.

Meet: Yelle

Julie Budet (aka the front-woman of Yelle) is a French electro-pop artist that does more than demand your ear’s attention. Joined by producers GrandMarnier (Jean-Francois Perrier) and Tepr (Tanguy Destable), the group create effortless dance music that will get you moving in no time.

It may be the simple fact that Budet does not utter one word of English, or maybe it’s the infectious hooks, whatever it is I’ve been sold a long time ago and now it’s your turn. With no intentions of slowing down, Yelle has just released their latest album Safari Disco Club which is 13-tracks of pure motion.

Check out some of my favorite songs below and be sure to watch their newest music video for track, “Comme Un Enfant.”

Comme Un Enfant (The 14th Minute Remix) – Yelle

S’eteint Le Soleil (Mistereric Remix) – Yelle

Que Veux Tu (Madeon Remix) – Yelle

BONUS:  I have to give credit to Vlad for hooking me up with this track. Xaphoon Jones of Chiddy Bang does an absolutely fantastic job with this remix. Extra bonus? He hails from Philly.

In Dreams – Another Green World

Now, this album will surely be the cure to your summer-nostalgia needs.

Another Green World is the moniker for Memphis-based electronic musician, Alec West. Released this past week, In Dreams, is a 10-track album full of searing synth-pop, guitar loops dripping with reverb, and a thick, hazy fog that brings out the deeply embedded lo-fi sound.

Sit back, stream the album below, and enjoy.

I thought it was my wake up call.

From start to finish, I could not stop listening to this enigmatic blend of electronic tones and traditional folk. From the same folks who brought you Italy’s Videodreams, Megaphone artists, The Storylines, create minimal yet incredibly detailed and honest music.

Two of my favorite genre’s come together in the group’s album, June Leaves, which sways in emotion, treads lightly on traditional italian influence, and mingles chamber pop with ambient tones. And the best part is that it’s completely free which you can grab here.

I also found this gem, a remix the group did of Videodreams’ song, “Ghost Track.” Pretty cool.
