Silence Yourself – Savages

Yesssss! I was COMPLETELY blown away after catching Savages during Complex Media’s CMJ showcase back in October and could not wait to hear what their debut full-length would sound like. Well, wait no more! Silence Yourself is out TODAY on Matador Records and you can stream the whole thing right in that lil box above.

These gals are the real deal. Solid rhythm section, soaring guitars, and extremely powerful vocals. I suggest listening to this album at a higher than normal volume but even more so, if possible, I recommend catching this group live.

Check out a few pictures [below] that I was able to snap back in October and go order the album!!! Continue reading

[Music Video] Coke Beat – The National Rifle

Another local feature, something I’m always pleased about.

The National Rife derive a much more different sound than what I’ve been listening to here in the city these days. From alt-country folk rockers, to the hardcore crowd, the surprisingly boosted up EDM community, and everything in between – this fourpiece adds quite a bit more reverb/new wave emphasis to their indie rock sound. I really dig it.

Watch the video above for their track, “Coke Beat,” off of their album recently released album, Almost Endless. The old type font, fuzzy visuals, and searing synths truly make you feel you’ve stepped back a few decades. I really dig the pairing.

Check out the rest of the album here and check out their tour schedule to see if the group is headed towards a city near you.

[Inbox Submission] Skeleton Lipstick

Philadelphia-local, Skeleton Lipstick, fell into my inbox seemingly out of nowhere the other day. I just can’t keep up with this city.

Gritty 80′s-styled synths glaze over your eardrums smoothed out by glo-fi beats – and trust me, it completely comes together. There’s a lot of things I want to ask the man behind this synthwave project. More specifically, how are you producing this wonderful music and performing Maxillofacial surgery at the same time? Well, perhaps not at the same time. But still.

This is what I love, when artists give me a little context to work with. Not everything is a mysterious secret. Skeleton Lipstick is a working professional who manages to make some impressive electronic music that takes our ears decades back in time. His apparent skill for life balance allows him to creatively stretch his mind when he’s not performing his grueling 9-5. How cool, right?

Listen below to his newest release, Glows Then Melts and be sure to put this gentleman on your radar.

BONUS:  Just, wow.

And from SL himself:

The song above is a teaser for the new album. It does not appear on the album. I took the 10 tracks from “glows then melts” then cut them up, and organized the chaos into a NEW promo track! Every sound in the song (except the vocals) is a loop from one of the ten tracks on “Glows then Melts.” Nothing too special, just a little bonus song I worked up in an hour so. Head over to AIRLINES TAPES bandcamp for the real songs!

58 days.

The tents are looking miiiiighty nice for Coachella nice this year.

I can totally see a Metronomy set going on under an intricate light show and a dance party all around me.

This group doesn’t lay on the shallow surface of electronic music, you’ll find them more in the depths with heavy dance-pop influences and meaningful lyrical content. Catchy as hell, their latest release, The English Riviera, was at the top of many in the industry’s best albums of 2011. Being the third studio release, it seems the English group have finally found their sound.

Listen below and make sure to watch the sweet video for “Everything Goes My Way.”

The Bay – Metronomy

The Look - Metronomy

The Look (Fred Falke Remix) – Metronomy

Foundations (Metronomy Remix) - Kate Nash

Be sure to check their tour dates, they’ll be coming to the U.S. in March to play a couple of shows before Coachella…right-click and enjoy.

Seagull of a Different Color (The Color being TEEEL)

Pink bookbag Flock of Seagulls TEEEL
Drugs are Bad

Our buddy TEEEL just Tweeted a link to a cover he did of the tune “Space Age Love Song” originally by Flock of Seagulls. In TEEEL’s hands, the song keeps a solid 80s vibe and I’m digging the production quality. Give it a listen.

Side Story: One of the band members from Flock of Seagulls currently lives in my hometown. He rides around on a bike and wears a pink backpack. Apparently the life of a rock star got to him as he is kind of bad off. He always goes around the corner from his house to a cafe/restaurant and asks for a cup of ice. He doesn’t have a fridge or freezer, so that’s how he gets cold drinks. Be careful with the drugs and alcohol, kids.

Now enjoy TEEEL’s work:

How do you Cure :papercutz?

The camera they used for this pic had to be crazy. It's got shadows inside of its flash!!!

That headline I just made is so dumb. I used the two names of the bands that I am writing about in this post and combined them in a play on words like I’m writing for some sort of newspaper or something.

It’s like a headline that would go on the frontpage/cover of a paper. It’s like I did my own interpretation of a newspaper headline. Like a cover song. Yeah, I covered the paper.

Speaking of paper and covers, :papercutz covered the song “Disintegration” by The Cure. I kinda love it. The timbres they chose to use were perfect, with certain ones reminding me of sounds that were used in the soundtrack of Labyrinth. So check out the original song and then compare it to the cover.

:papercutz Version:

You said it was worth it.

As much as I have music-ADD where I can jump from track to track, artist to artist, genre to genre, I really do enjoy listening to an album from start to finish. So much goes into just picking the song order (or maybe it doesn’t?) among other things that it’s always interesting to hear the flow of what the artist(s) envisioned for their final product.

Going through the shelf of albums and promos I’ve collected over the year I grabbed a few to accompany me on my way to King of Prussia for a shoe-shopping mission (calm your mouth read: i’m in a wedding in less then a month). The standouts of the day? Kevin Devine and Maria Taylor’s newest of course.  I may be dedicating my incredibly successful trip to the two jussaying (3 pairs under $200, hello sales!).

Devine’s Between The Concrete & Clouds suggests a state of being in limbo like song, “Sleepwalking Through My Life” describes. It’s true, that perpetual daily drive when you feel the haze of performing monotonous tasks without having enough time to actually stop and take the world in all around you.  I go through it often, frustrated when I can’t enjoy the sunshine just for a quick 5 minutes. Devine’s latest, released only 2 days ago, is a peppy indie rock album that is more than just ‘listenable.’ All of his songs range in acoustic melodies and emotions yet cohesive enough for a spectacular and enjoyable album.

The First Hit – Kevin Devine

It really should be no surprise that I’m talking about Maria Taylor here. I can’t think of many artists that have transcended along life with me the way Taylor has (sounds deep, damn). Her music has grown with me over the years and it’s been a really nice and comforting thing.  All music changes and evolves, I’ve just been lucky that I’ve enjoyed every step Taylor has made along the way. Getting my hands on Overlook was exciting since she returned to her home state of Alabama for the album.  Her lyrics are always telling of what’s going on in her head, evoking raw emotion that comes out uncensored. I honestly love her observations on life and how she views the world surrounding her, which is even more apparent in her latest.

Happenstance – Maria Taylor

I could have picked the entire track-listing to talk about, hell, I could have even wrote an entire album review.  But, it’s much more simpler then that.  Along with Devine’s it’s a stunning album though, was I even surprised? Do yourself a favor and purchase both. They’re worth escaping to on these trailing days of summer.

Right-click and enjoy.

BONUS:   Significant Other – Celebrity Traffic   My bad guys, seriously my bad.  I’ve been sitting on this little jam for way too long, go on, move your feet.

P.S. What’s up Walt Whit? has been updated, read on.

I’ll make the coffee and you read the paper.

Shit’s been wild around here lately. I don’t know who reads this thing and where you’re located but, me? I live in Philadelphia and yesterday the office I was sitting in, diligently typing away, started to shake.  It was cute, my very first earthquake.  After I broke out of that realization I then fought the urge to hide under my desk and instead, filed out of the building with everyone else like a normal person.

Weird day right?

So that’s what is going on with this music selection today.  I have no words really to explain the order, you know, just like life and all, can’t predict everything that’s going on.  Or maybe I’m all wacked out from the amount of Pinesol I inhaled today. Either way, right-click and enjoy.

I See You – Yung Life   It’s like 80′s, then it’s unsurppressed chillwave..it honestly just works.

How Lucky We Are – meiko   Fine, sound the sapster-horn but this song melts me and I think it’s every 23 year old’s personal anthem.  It’s this hopeful optimism that I try to keep lit, especially being such a media-aware person and constantly feeling more jaded every single day.  Also, this song would be great to remix because I think you could rework and turn it upside down.  Anyone up for the challenge? (then drop that shit in our drop box!!)

The Swan Machine – Butcher Blades/   I truly have no clue what’s going on in this song..steel drums and an electronica breakdown right in the middle of it all? I am so, so drawn to this track I just want to dance in a circle (is that weird?). They describe their sound as “musical surgery.” God damn perfect.

Because I’ve been slacking on the content, I’ve updated a cool 120 as well. Lastly, remember my friend bFunk?

He likes to draw pictures.

It’s just one of those days around here..
