Still Awake EP – Ryan Hemsworth

ryan hemsworth

Just the other day, DJ, Producer, Young Canadian, remixer, yadda-yadda Ryan Hemsworth released his newest cute little EP featuring a whole bunch of lush dreamy sounding melodies and nicely produced hiphop/danceable beats. What I really enjoy about Hemsworth, even in his DJ sets and mixes, is that he has a tremendous way of capturing various moods and emotions and then carrying you through them to new and unexpected places. This EP is a fine example of his ability to do just that; capturing what I feel is a very somber and intimate mood.

The more I stay the same, the less things start to change.

bombay show pig

I was instantly struck by the heavy sound that just two people can make together.

Bombay Show Pig is Mathias Janmaat and Linda van Leeuwen, a Dutch duo with an incredibly tight, complimenting sound. I can’t get over their single, “Timewaster,” which is classic, driving indie rock with enough lo-fi on the vocals to keep me content. Grab your copy below and be sure to check out the rest of their debut album, Vulture/Provider.

[Meet] Fallulah

fallulah

Strong female vocals, check. Thumping percussion, check. Stand out production, check. I think it’s beyond obvious that we’ve got a winner on our hands.

Hailing from none other than the Nordic region, I wouldn’t expect less than an explosive electro/power-pop sound. I’m captivated by Maria Apetri’s vocals and her accompanying relentless rhythm. More notably known by her stage name, Fallulah, her fabulous debut, Black Cat Neighbourhood, is a mixture of cutesy melodies and power ballads with just the right amount of softness.

For fans of Oh Land, Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey and the like, listen to a handful of tracks from the album below.

Fallulah is coming straight off a brand new and lovely release titled, Escapismwhich you can nab here. Ready for the world, listen to Apetri’s latest single, “Out of it,” over and over again below. Enjoy.

Chicago’s The-Drum: New Sounds

the-drum

Over the last several months Chicago’s The-Drum have been crazy busy. Working on a new album, collabo projects, solo work, re-mixes, side projects, and more.

Just a few days ago the duo dropped TWO new remixes on us; the first being a total rework of Maal A Goomba’s  ”Ashley’s Intervention“. They take the original track, soak it down and infuse it with their smooth future R&B, footwork style production. Check that one out rye cheaah.

Ashley’s Intervention (The-DRUM Remix) – MAAL

The second is a remix of the already sexy late night boo lovin’ jam, “Under Attack,” by Shy Girls. For this one, the guys strip down and improve on pretty much all of the original instrumentation. Really slick and deep sounding synths, drum sounds, and improved sax section. Not to mention, the vocals are killer.

Say My Name (Cyril Hahn Remix) – Destiny’s Child

I was waiting for a good time to put this up and after that Super Bowl halftime performance I think this is the PERFECT time.

Kind of an interesting little story about this song, or at least how I came about first hearing it. I was at a bar in Brooklyn and through the late-night chatter of the crowd I heard this song in the background. It was the perfect soundtrack for the setting I was in and had to find out who it was. I asked the bartender, who happened to have put the whole night’s playlist together and found out it was a remix from Cyril Hahn, a Switzerland born producer now living in Vancouver, British Columbia.

This track is pure gold. It completely flips the original Destiny’s Child track “Say My Name” upside-down and makes it a grooving late night atmospheric sex jam. Please listen to this at a pleasingly audible volume  late at night and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

48 Hours of Ta-Ku *update*

Ta-ku has been pretty damn busy, as well as blowing up since we last mentioned his name here on What’s Protocol. He played a set during one of the the [in]famous Boiler Room parties over in Australia (P.S. I’m still trying to get an invite in NYC!!) , he’s been putting out one song every night for 25 days (see “25 nights for nujabes“), and he has even been chilling with Childish Gambino(?). For all that he’s been doing, and all the love he’s been receiving, he’s giving some love right back to his fans.

For the next 48 (now 48-ish) hours everything over on his bandcamp site is totally free. Just submit your e-mail address and go to town! And if you do go to town, bump them loudly and show him some more love anyway you can. Go see him live, buy something; whatever you so choose. The homie deserves it!

So go on OVER and have yourself a listen/download.

A very RAC New Year’s…

I love New Year’s Eve here in Philadelphia…because it means it’s almost New Year’s Day, and that’s a fantastic thing in this city. The Mummers Parade is just a very bizarre way to ring in the new year, that’s all I can really say.

Anyways..the Remix Artist Collective has completely blown up this year. Started up by Andre Anjos back in 2007, the project has grown into a true collective – spanning across many different genres, even now creating original content outside of the remix world.

2013′s going to be a great year, but let’s make 2012 go down with one of the best electronic acts out there.

House Party – RAC

Dreamboat (RAC remix) – Psychic Powers

Climbing Up The Walls – RAC feat. Liz Anjos

No Strings (RAC Remix) – Mayer Hawthorne

We Come Running (RAC Remix) – Youngblood Hawke

Feed Me Diamonds (RAC Remix) – MNDR

Worse It Gets (RAC Remix) – Penguin Prison

Hollywood (The Magician Remix) – RAC

Wait Up (Boots Of Danger) (RAC Mix) – Tokyo Police Club

Blue Jeans (RAC Remix) – Lana Del Rey

Sweet Disposition (RAC Mix) – The Temper Trap

Armistice (RAC Mix) – Phoenix

When I’m Small (RAC Mix) – Phantogram

Right-click and enjoy, see you all in 2013!

[Nice In The Headphones] Nayu – Tonmo

Lush and expansive beat-making, I think that’s what Nice In The Headphones is all about.

“nayu” is a fantastic little re-working of the My Brightest Diamond track, “Feeling Good.”  Tonmo, the 18 y/o behind the edit, adds a cerebral chillwave tone to an already beautiful song. Dreamy and vast, I really like this young Icelander’s style.

Listen to “nayu” below and check out the rest of his ever-growing collection of music via his Soundcloud page. I especially love his song “AhUhh,” but he keeps it most real with his creative tagging.
